Commercial Fleet Manager

About the Role

This is a new role leading the strategic, financial, and operational management of Mecsia's 1,000-vehicle commercial fleet. The Commercial Fleet Manager will build a central fleet function, deliver group-wide efficiencies, and integrate fleets from future acquisitions — covering vehicle acquisition, finance, utilisation, maintenance, disposal, telematics, insurance, vendors, policy, and driver performance/compliance.

Fleet activity is currently run in different ways across the trading companies. A core part of the role is developing the strategy and processes to move more services to a central, shared model.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Operations & Performance

• Working with the trading companies, manage day-to-day performance of the 1,000-vehicle fleet (vans, cars, specialist vehicles) across trading companies.

• Use telematics and analytics to improve availability, utilisation, fuel use, idling, routing, and driver behaviour.

• Drive continuous improvement and share best practice across the Group.

Maintenance & Asset Management

• Design preventive maintenance programmes with trading-company teams to minimise downtime and extend asset life.

• Maintain accurate fleet records, service logs, and life-cycle cost models.

• Manage end-of-life disposal, de-fleet, and replacement planning.

Financial Management

• Own the annual fleet budget — fuel, maintenance, leasing, insurance.

• Consolidate finance providers to deliver Group-wide savings.

• Analyse total cost of ownership, recommend replacement cycles, and optimize resale value in vehicle disposals.

• Report monthly and quarterly on fleet performance and spend.

Transition to a Central Operating Model

• Move services currently run by trading companies to shared Group providers.

• Identify and run projects that deliver financial savings and operational efficiency.

• Integrate newly acquired businesses into the Group fleet model.

Safety, Compliance & Sustainability

• Ensure full compliance with DfT, DVSA, and environmental regulations.

• Develop and enforce fleet safety policies and driver compliance standards.

• Work with Group Safety and ESG to provide reporting in line with Group requirements.

• Oversee incident reporting, collision investigations, and insurance claims.

• Maintain driver qualification records and ensure licences and certifications remain current.

• Lead adoption of EVs, alternative fuels, and emissions-reduction initiatives.

Vendor & Contractor Management

• Rationalise OEMs and service providers (telematics, roadside assistance, insurance, safety training) to reduce cost.

• Manage relationships with finance companies, dealerships, service networks, and fuel card suppliers.

• Work with Group Procurement on RFPs, contract negotiations, and vendor performance reviews.

• Hold vendors to agreed SLAs and cost commitments.

Driver Management & Support

• Partner with trading-company HR and operations on driver onboarding and safety training.

• Monitor driver performance through telematics, safety scores, and KPI dashboards.

• Develop coaching, incentive, and corrective-action programmes.

Key Skills & Experience

• 5–10+ years in fleet management, with at least 3 years managing fleets of 500+ vehicles.

• Commercial vehicle experience and strong working knowledge of DfT/DVSA compliance.

• Proficiency with fleet management software, telematics platforms, and data analytics.

• Strong vendor negotiation and contract management skills.

       Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organisational skills.

• Track record of leading teams and delivering against cost and budget targets.
